SIMULATION OF OFF-GRID, OFF-PIPE, SINGLE-FAMILY DETACHED RESIDENCES IN U.S. CLIMATES

This paper discusses current efforts to simulate off- grid, off-pipe houses in five U.S. locations in different climate zones, using an integrated analysis that evaluates the performance of energy and water efficiency and renewable energy measures in each location1. The study aims to eliminate the need for non- renewable sources of energy and municipal water in residences by using off-grid, off-pipe design approach. To accomplish this, a simulation model of a 2001 International Energy Conservation Code compliant house in each location was analyzed to determine the base-case energy and water use; then, by simulating energy and water efficiency measures, building energy and water needs were reduced. Finally, the sizing of renewable energy and water collection systems was performed to meet or exceed the reduced needs and achieve complete self-sufficiency in terms of energy and water use.
